Companioning The Bereaved
A Five-Week Book Study Guide
Created by Postvention Consulting LLC to accompany the book,
Companioning the Bereaved: A Soulful Guide for Caregivers by Dr. Alan Wolfelt

In our search for a model of compassionate caregiving that could be used as a foundation supporting LOSS Team volunteers, we found Dr. Wolfelt's model of Companioning. Companioning the bereaved is rooted in being totally present to the mourner, even being a temporary guardian of their soul.  It is anchored in the "teach me" perspective. A caregiver's awareness of this need to learn is the essence of the companioning model. The pressure is off to come up with the perfect thing to say or do. We are not there to "fix" someone's grief.

This Companioning the Bereaved Study Guide is meant to be used with Dr. Wolfelt's book, Companioning the Bereaved: A  Soulful Guide for Caregivers, We have found reading this book and study guide in a small group setting is a powerful way to bring bereavement caregivers together and explore their own thoughts and even fears about connecting with suicide loss survivors and about how their own loss(es) may influence their ability to be fully present as a caregiver.

This Book Study Guide was designed specifically for post-scene follow up interactions. It is ideal for all volunteers who interact with survivors at events, through phone calls, or facilitate suicide loss support groups.
